When you study French history, the city is a recurring one you hear. It was a fiercely independent port, a Protestant stronghold, and a city with a heavy role in the slave trade and French expansion to the Americas. There is a lot to reconcile when you visit, and I think the city has done a fairly good job of offering something to a very wide range of visitors. The tourist office counts around 3 million visits a year across the destination, which surprised me because you would assume La Rochelle is more of a French secret. But it isn’t; alongside French tourists, there was an array of British, Dutch, German, American, and Spanish tourists.
